Surely, at some point in your life, you have owned a car and hoped that it would come to life in an instant. There are some iconic cars from movies and TV that make us have car envy and hope that with a push of a button we could be in the Batmobile. First off, Pixar’s film “Cars”. This movie follows Lightening McQueen (played by Owen Wilson) while he tries to make it back from the run down town of Radiator Spring in hopes to win the Piston Cup. There are many other characters that we meet during McQueen’s journey, Mater the loveable tow-truck (played by Larry the Cable Guy), Sally Carrera (Bonnie Hunt), and former Piston Cup winner Doc Hudson (played by Paul Newman). This race car is a new rookie for the races and can reach extreme high speeds. He has some interesting features that model actual race cars, like having stickers instead of headlights. However, this car talks, has eyes, and has a winning personality.

Next on our list is KITT from Knight Rider. KITT, Knight Industries Three Thousand, is a sporty 1982 Pontiac Trans Am and has an artificially intelligent computer installed that allows it to help Michael Knight (David Hasselhoff) fight crime. KITT (William Daniels) has a special body armor that protects it from just about any type of firearm and can resist extreme heat. The super computer on wheels of course could talk, but not only that, he was fluent in Spanish and French, and even has a variety of different accents. This really was the best car ever for any human crime fighter since it could talk, smell, hear, could examine the area, had an array of weapons, had different modes like silent mode, and of course he could still function as a regular car. Pardon me, an awesome car.

Herbie is a very iconic car which lands it in the next slot on our list. This old school Volkswagon Beetle race car actually in habits the human soul who made him named Herbie. Herbie can function just fine on its own like any normal car: driving itself, reasoning, thinking, knowing the difference between good and evil. Ok, so normal cars don’t do that last one, or any of those. But, Herbie does race and help its owners survive different situations and helping good prevail over evil.

Some people can be obsessive about a car, but what about a car obsessed with it’s owner. That is the case with the car Chrstine. In the movie, Christine was portrayed as a 1958 Plymouth Fury who was obsessed with her owner Arnie (Keith Gordon). Christen takes it upon herself to find those who insult, hurt, or attempt to separate her and her love, Arnie. She can’t talk like some of the other cars like KITT of Lightening McQueen, but like Herbie, it’s as if her soul is trapped within the car. And, what a soul it is. Christen will wreak havoc to anyone who does her Arnie wrong, no matter how much it may hurt her. Hell hath no fury like a woman, um, car scorned.

Sedan

Hatch-backs are usually smaller cars and they often have only three doors, including the swing door at the back.

Estate

Due to the extended rear compartment, estate cars are normally quite long.

Convertible

Convertibles, sometimes called cabriolets, are the types of cars where the roof can be removed so that it can be driven with the roof open in the summer. They are usually a similar sized car to a coupe style car and they too generally have limited room inside and are not suitable for any more than two people. The roof is often made of soft fabric; hence the term soft top, but more expensive convertibles might have hard tops that are folded back by hydraulics.

M.P.V

The term M.P.V, or multi-purpose vehicle, is usually applied to vehicles that have large bodies, like a van, but it still has both rear and side doors. Examples of M.P.V’s are people carriers, minivans, and multi utility vehicles (M.U.V’s). They can often seat as many as seven people and they are also characterised by being higher off the ground than a saloon type of car.

Pickup

Pickup trucks are the type of vehicle that has a flat-bed open space at the rear of the vehicle for carrying luggage and equipment. They are usually large vehicles, often 4×4, and they are designed to carry heavy loads, as well as people.

Off-Road

An off-road vehicle, such as a Land Rover, or a Jeep, will have been designed to be driven on the roads as well as off them. Typically, they will have a 4×4 drive, and the ability to be driven in very low gears, so that they can cope with muddy and difficult terrain.

Generally, the colour of the car a motorist chooses to buy is either down to personal preference, or has had no bearing on the purchase at all.

Many people are prepared to sacrifice their favourite colour for a cheaper and more economical vehicle, or one for which they can get a lower cost car insurance quote.

However, various studies, such as one undertaken by a research team from the University of Tilburg in the Netherlands in 2010, show that some colour vehicles are stolen less often (brighter colours like pink and orange), so this might be something which drivers take into account when browsing used car websites or showroom forecourts.

Another colour-related study of vehicles by researchers from Monash University in Australia in 2007 showed that some drivers apparently put themselves at greater risk of suffering an accident due to the colour of their car’s paintwork.

From time to time, a private investigator might be asked to track down a missing car. A car can be stolen from a public place, private residence, or a car rental agency.

Types of Car Thefts:

During economically challenged times, car thefts increase. Some people try to steal cars from rental agencies by using fake IDs to rent cars, and then simply never return them. Some steal cars for their own use, whether for regular daily use or for transporting contraband and later abandonment. Some turn the stolen vehicles over to chop shops, where the cars will be used for parts. Some just want a car to take on a race or joyride, and will abandon the car after using it for a period of time.

Some will sell a stolen car to an unsuspecting person, who has no idea that he or she just purchased a stolen vehicle. Sometimes, the owner sold the car in good faith to a person who passed a bad cheque. In other cases, a couple may have surrendered their second car to a re-leasing company to cut down on expenses; however, the car may have been leased to a “customer” who disappeared. Thefts may be for convenience – the thief may have some stolen goods to transport.

No matter what the reason for the theft, it’s up to the private investigator to use his or her ingenuity to figure out what happened and track down the car. It’s always a good idea to file a police report first, but because the police might not be able to take the time to track down your vehicle, a good Private Investigator can come in handy.

How We Track Down the Car:

A private investigator will use tools such as phone calls, casual conversations, and interviews. A good Investigator knows how to word questions and statements to get the most cooperation. Most people are shocked if someone they know has stolen a vehicle, and they will want to cooperate. The trick is in putting all the pieces of the puzzle together and tracking down hard information that is admissible in a court case.

Investigators can use license plate scanners, GPS tracking that comes with certain cars, handheld devices, cameras mounted on cars, or interviews with anyone whose job requires driving around, such as delivery workers. PI Agencies in some countries might have memberships in professional organizations where information gathered from license plate scanners is stored in a database. Surveillance on public streets is generally legal and does not overstep privacy issues. One popular technique is keep a watchlist of all vehicles reported stolen by owners, and using the scanners to detect license plates of parked vehicles. Since thieves often switch license plates, it can take time.

The human element in the form of social media and community alerts can work wonders, too. It’s never a good idea for a friend to confront a car thief, but it can be really useful if they snap pictures or report sightings of the stolen vehicle without getting noticed by the perpetrator.

Clumsy planning on the part of the thief helps, too. Sometimes a thief will falsify an ID card to rent a car that they never return, but use a real address of someone they know. As we interview the person whose address was used, the person might recognize the description of the thief and give us clues as to where to find him or her. We can then conduct a surveillance and get videos of the perpetrator using the stolen car, which will be admissible in court. Once we have enough evidence to stand up in court, we can wait for the perpetrator to turn in for the night and immobilize the car with car boots before there is any attempt to make contact.

Over the years, Private Investigators form relationships with informants. Knowing how to befriend people who can supply information is golden. Cooperation from all sources is the most important key to solving crimes, and a good Private Investigator knows how to form those relationships.

Other sources of information, although not glamorous, are salvage yards, auto manufacturers, trash bins on public streets, and hidden cameras in public areas. We can also keep lists of vehicles with out-of-area registration tags on them, check on the vehicle registration for those tags, and track down the lienholder (lender) for the vehicle. That is public information and we can call the lender to see if the vehicle is stolen.

Another easy way to verify if a car is the one we’re looking for is to check the VIN number, which is often in plain sight on the driver’s side.

Repossession of the Car:

Once the car is located, it can be repossessed rather easily and the Private Investigator and client will agree upon the method in advance. Upon finding the car, it can be booted or disabled before the PI does one of three things depending on what the client wants: knocks on the suspect’s door and asks for the keys, notify the police, or notify the client. It is never a good idea for the client to contact the perpetrator, but the client could contact the police.

If the client is a business such as a rental car agency, the client may instruct the private investigator to repossess the vehicle. A team of two pis will drive to the location, boot the car, and explain to the perpetrator who they are and why they are there. They will cite to the violator the specific vehicle codes that were violated and the jail time or fines attached with such crimes. They will be firm but also very professional. Most perpetrators will hand over the keys without too much fuss once confronted. If not, a tow truck can be called to remove the vehicle. This should not be done without hard evidence and knowing the laws in your area.

How to Prevent Theft:

Most vehicles sold nowadays have key codes or tracking systems such as LoJack or Onstar. Some have microdots that tag individual parts of the car, so they can be identified if the car goes to a chop shop. However, even very sophisticated systems can be bypassed by professional thieves.

The best car theft prevention devices, such as ignition interlock and pedal locks, disable the vehicle so that it can’t be moved without the right key. If your car does not come with these devices, you can buy a self-setting immobilizer. Always lock your vehicle and park in the safest spots you can.

Unfortunately, car thefts are very common. Using reasonable security precautions and keeping a photograph and copies of vehicle registration information can help you in case of a theft. A good Private Investigator will work for your better interests in recovering the car.

Explanation of modern sensors used on modern vehicles

The days of old are gone where a vehicle has a simple 4 stroke combustion engine in it and no regard for the environmental impact it had on the planet. All modern vehicles rely on a computerised system to make sure your vehicles perform as efficiently and environmentally friendly as possible.

I will try to cover and explain as many of the current sensors and their functions. There may be other specific sensors in production but the ones i will cover here are basically standard on all modern cars and light trucks.

First and foremost in the line up would be the ECU also known as either an Engine Control Unit or Electronic Control Unit. This item does exactly as it is named, it controls all of the vehicles engine electronic sensors and tells other parts of the engine how much to compensate for certain circumstances in order to make the engine as efficient as possible. In some cases the ECU also controls many if not all of the interior electric components as well. As long as the ECU is working properly it can read millions of values per second sent to it by the sensors on the vehicle, it then adjusts other electronic parts to compensate and make the vehicle run correctly.

Next we will touch on the Lambda sensors, otherwise known as Oxygen sensors or O2 sensors for short. These sensors are located in the exhaust system itself. The sensor portion itself is located directly in the stream of the exhaust gasses and its sole purpose is to rear the exhaust gas composition and report it back to the ECU. If a lambda sensor tells the ECU then the vehicle is running a bit too lean, the ECU then compensates by allowing more fuel into the engine to richer the mixture, the reverse stands true if the vehicle is running rich to begin with.

The next pair of sensors we will talk about is the MAP or Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor/ MAF Mass Air Flow sensor, the reason we are covering these together is because a vehicle will be equipped with either one or the other, not both. The MAP sensor provides information to the ECU that calculates air density and flow rate, this helps the ECU to figure out if it needs to add more fuel or less to provide optimal combustion. The MAF sensor reads changes in air density as it enters the engine allowing the ECU to determine if more or less fuel is needed for optimum combustion.

The knock sensor is another important sensor on the engine. It’s only function is to listen to the engine and report to the ECU if there is any detonation in the cylinders of the engine. If detonation is present then the ECU varies the ignition spark time either forwards or backwards to compensate and provide optimum combustion.

The coolant temperature sensor is an often overlooked but important sensor in the day to day running of the engine. This sensor reads the temperature of the coolant and makes adjustments to the air and fuel mixture to bring the vehicle up to optimum operating temperature quickly, a faulty coolant temperature sensor can cause many problems, if it is not reading properly the ECU may be telling the engine to add more air and fuel to bring the engine up to temperature when it is already there. Thus making the engine less efficient and wasting fuel. A faulty coolant temperature sensor can also cause the electric cooling fans to either come on to early or too late or even in worst cases not come on at all causing the vehicle to overheat.

Rest assured there are probably many other sensors on your vehicle but the ones listed above are common on all modern vehicles. If you suspect one is not working as it should then please take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic and ask them to run a diagnostic on it, a £50 diagnostic charge now is allot better than the cost of an engine if a fault is ignored.
